MY RESEARCH AND INFLUENCES.

Artists That Have Influenced My Work.

Jody Rogac.

Whilst exploring fashion photography within my A Level personal investigation, I spent some time looking into Vogue and artists that have worked with them. I found Jody Rogac through Vogue's website as she is 'most entirely new to Vogue'. I further explored Rogac and her work and was in awe of her style. The simplicity of her images is what stands out to me most. Her use of simple colour palettes and basic clothing paired with a black, white or grey background has greatly influenced my most recent work, displayed on my portraiture page and my fashion page - found under my projects. Many of Rogac's portraiture images are bold in emotion, yet soft in colour and light. Each of Rogac's images tells a story through her use of colour, light, space and depth of field.

Yolanda Y. Liou.

Yolanda Y. Liou was one of the first artists I did research on when I began my exploration into fashion. I visited an online exhibition where her work was displayed, I was immediately drawn Liou's style of photography and did some deeper research on her and her work. What appeals to me the most about her work is the story behind it. Liou uses fashion photography to explore the human body and express her own struggles with body image. In Asian culture, 'skinny' is seen as beautiful and the 'relentless expectation of being skinny' affected her 'mentally and physically' from a young age. I love Liou's use of colour and shapes within her images, positioning her subjects in unique ways means her images are so much more complex and interesting for viewers to look at. I have taken inspiration from different concepts of Liou's work: the way she makes her images but also the significance of having a story behind an image or a collection of images.

My Previous Research.

As part of my A Level personal investigation, lots of research is required. This can be into genres, styles, artists, concepts and more. I believe research is a very important factor of photography as it allows you to get a gauge of the variety in the subject and take inspiration from other artists.

Another part of photography I believe is important is the need for consistency and structure within work. My attitude towards photography as a subject and a profession improved greatly when I started having a structure within my A Level work as I felt I had more rhythm and control over the way my projects were going.
